Mike Byrne graduated in Ceramic Design from Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) Ireland, in 1977. This was followed by a period working as a designer in the national design centre at Kilkenny Design Workshops. In 1980 he established a production unit designing and producing for the home market and continued working as a designer to the ceramic industry. Mike began lecturing in the mid eighties and around that time developed an interest in printmaking, which culminated in an MA in Fine Art in 2000.
He continues to explore both the ceramic and printmaking strands within his practice and has exhibited extensively both at home and abroad. His work features in a number of national collections including the Ulster Museum, AIB bank, University of Limerick, The National Self Portrait Collection, and the Office of Public Works. Having worked as Course leader of the Ceramic Design Course at LSAD from 2009 to 2015, Mike is now concentrating fully on his artistic practice, living and working in Limerick City.
In 2016 he won the Peter Brennan Award for innovation.
